My Philosophy

           

 

          My name is Coach Terry Wilson. I am an Independent Triathlon Coach.  I coach IRONMAN© distance athletes.  Ironman is a triathlon consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and 26.2 mile run.   I coach endurance athletes to help them achieve their endurance dreams.  It's my pleasure, and I take great pride in helping athletes achieve what previously seemed impossible.  On my podcast Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I interview athletes about their race and share their knowledge and experience with you.  I also coach athletes who compete in marathons, half marathons, and other distance triathlons.  

            As a virtual triathlon coach, my philosophy is much different than a typical coach. Because of this, I must use all the tools I have to the best of my ability.  The athletes I coach value my confidence, dependability, openness, and most of all, my honesty.  I’m confident in my ability to use working knowledge to analyze athlete data, test limits, find a clear path and allow the plan to fit into their life with ease.  When working with me, there is a clear expectation to complete workouts every day, openly communicate, and give honest feedback.  This allows me to walk athletes through their journey of fitness, gaining strength, and achieving big goals.

            It is my goal that every athlete I coach will understand their plan, their progress, and how to adjust when life happens. While I value data, I value the athlete more.  I have had the privilege of working with talented athletes that have chased the highly sought-after Kona Slot (the World Championship of Ironman distance races).  Beyond the talent, I see the relationship that I have with athletes as far more than a coach-athlete mentorship.  To me, coaching is the ability to work with another person and help them achieve their goals.  Witnessing the raw emotions of dreams being realized allows my tank to always be full. This is why I coach.

            There are more than 2,500 coaches in the United States. Many look at the data, the science, the numbers, and attempt to figure out the perfect plan for each athlete. Where many go wrong is they don’t account for the athlete’s life.  I find great joy in understanding athletes and driving them toward their goals. It is an incredibly rewarding journey, and my athletes are worth every phone call, Facetime, text message, and e-mail.

            I believe coaching is about understanding each athlete’s goal and helping them become the best athlete they can be.  From a weight loss journey, to finishing a half-ironman distance race, to qualifying for Kona, I respect each athlete’s individual goals and am committed to walking through their journey alongside them.

Are you in the market for an Endurance Coach? If so, here are some questions I recommend asking the coaches you interview along with my answers to these questions for a comparison. I highly recommend interviewing more than five coaches to get a true understanding of what you’re wanting, what you’ll be getting, and to have a clear understanding of how much the coach will be invested into your goals.

  

1.      DO YOU GIVE A FREE CONSULTATION?

a.      Yes, always.  I block out a 90 minute time frame where I ask the athlete questions and vice versa. This serves as a time where athletes can ask questions about what to expect, when workouts will be uploaded, and what data analysis looks like, along with anything else.

2.      WHAT DO I GET FOR MY INVESTMENT?

a.      All of my deliverables are on the Coaching Services Page.

3.      WHY DO YOU COACH? (FIND AN ANSWER THAT YOU CONNECT WITH!)

a.      I coach because I enjoy the journey of finding the balance of the athlete’s life, training, work, and seeing them improve.  I enjoy being a part of their journey for their goal and helping them grow through their doubts and accomplish the previously thought impossible goals.  The raw emotion that I have been a witness to on several occasions still leaves me in striving to do better.  The relationships I develop with my athletes are part of why I coach, these relationships are more than just a coach/athlete relationship, and I am a friend, mentor, confidant, and sounding board for all things in their life. 

4.      DESCRIBE AND LIST YOUR ATHLETES' SUCCESSES. (A GREAT ATHLETE DOESn’t NECESSARILY MAKE FOR A GREAT COACH.)

a.      I have athletes who podium at Ironman distance, and I have athletes who finish in the infamous midnight hour.  I understand what it takes for all spectrums and realize the dedication it takes for all ranges of athletes to achieve their goals.

5.     HOW QUICK DO YOU TYPICALLY RESPOND TO TEXTS, EMAILS, CALLS? HOW FREQUENTLY CAN I EXPECT COMMUNICATION?

a.      I typically respond to texts within minutes, unless I am driving or busy.  E-mails are reserved for things athletes want me to take a closer look at and give a greater amount of detailed feedback on. I typically initiate conversations with athletes.  I value a high level of communication.  I also attempt to FaceTime often to get a feel for how training is going and how an athlete is adjusting, physically and mentally.

6.      WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR TRAINING PHILOSOPHIES?

a.      My philosophy is mentioned in the section above.

7.      WHAT IS YOUR ONGOING EDUCATION PLAN FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS? (EVERY GOOD COACH SHOULD PURSUE CONTINUED LEARNING.)

a.      My education plan is discussed in the next section.

8.      HOW DO YOU PLAN TO HELP BALANCE MY WORK LIFE AND TRAINING? 

a.      Every other Friday I send out an availability form.  Within the form, there are dates for the next two weeks.  I have created a spreadsheet that entails how many training hours per week they need for their goal race.  Athletes fill the form out stating how much they can workout during a given week.   In the later stages of training for a longer distance race, I believe it is important to dedicate time for spouse/family/significant other.  Burnout and over-training can be challenging on relationships. I am intentional about this topic through all stages of training.

9.      HOW DO YOU PLAN TO ASSESS WHERE I’M AT AS AN ATHLETE?

a.      I conduct benchmark workouts with the athlete and ask lots of questions.  I have an intake form for current abilities, equipment, and recent duration achievements for the swim, bike, and run portions.  Once there is a clear understanding of where you are as an athlete, I create a Skeleton Plan for you to get better.  I walk you through the different stages of training we will conduct and help you see the bigger picture.  I do this through the use of video notes that I provide every two weeks.

10.   HOW WILL YOU HELP ME INCREASE MY KNOWLEDGE OF THE SPORT?

a.      I encourage athletes to ask questions about anything they do not understand.  Whether it be regarding workouts, the overall picture, or how to set up transitions, all of this is part of the triathlon package.  My goal is equip you to train and race intelligently, no matter what is thrown at you on race day.

 
 

My Education Plan

As an Independent Triathlon Coach, I need to have a plan to best equip my athletes in all their endurance careers.  I’ve outlined that plan below:

1.     In 2018, I launched a podcast to interview athletes that have completed endurance events ranging from the half marathon to the Ultra distance races in order to learn firsthand what went well, what didn’t go as expected and how to take their experience and share that knowledge with my athletes. My goal is to have more than 1,000 episodes recorded and published by the end of 2021.

2.    In 2019, I will gain the IronmanU Certification for the knowledge it possesses.

3.    In 2019, I will be putting together PowerPoint presentations for many of the 70.3 and 140.6 distance races and posting these videos on YouTube or Facebook Live in order to share the courses, cut off times, transition locations, and travel tips for athletes.  This will give me more insight to each race and allow me to help others along the way. I will be using the knowledge, pictures, and information I gained from my podcast for these presentations.

4.     In 2019, I will be graduating with my undergrad in Kinesiology and Sport Management in the fall from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas.

5.     In 2019, I will become a NASM Certified Personal Trainer.

6.     In 2020, I will submit my packet to become a USA Triathlon Level II Certified Coach.  I must have a degree in the field in order to be considered.  For this reason, it must come after my formal education.

7.    Continued: I read between 20-35 books each year with subjects ranging from management, endurance sports, heart rate training, diets, swimming sports, bike endurance training, and sport psychology.
