IRONMAN© 70.3 Purto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico

March

This is a great race, but you need to be fully aware of the transition, swim start, and logistics going into this race.  This race has a swim start that is quite a ways away from the transition area.  You have to take consider this when leaving transition to get to the swim start.  In a sense this could be considered a point to point swim.  This is an easy swim course to navigate, but it is salt water.  Don’t bank on a wetsuit even though it is an earlier season race.  The swim out to transition area is a little longer than you may expect. The bike course is an out and back, with a looped portion.  Similar to the lollipop idea, this course is easy to navigate, just a portion is repeated twice.  Expect winds, humidity, and heat even though the time of year doesn’t say it’ll be that hot.  Nutrition is key to this race for the run.  The run course is exposed with minimal shade with amazing views.  This is a must do course for athletes.  New comers to the sport need to be have fun, but be aware of flying with their bike is a bit of an issue, but nothing to really worry about.  A solid bike case, pay the extra fee, and you’re good to go. I’d this race, but I wouldn’t worry too much about the language barrier.  It’s a non-issue.

Would I do this race? Yes
